Agenda

성수동은 현재 국내외의 트렌디하고 도전적인 문화 컨텐츠들이 가장 먼저 스스로를 선보이고 싶어 하는 장소라고 볼 수 있다. 그러나, 이러한 선도적인 문화 흐름이 지속가능하기 위해서는 계속해서 새로운 문화 컨텐츠를 창작, 발굴, 혹은 변형해줄 문화인들이 필요하다. 특정 대형 브랜드들의 고착화된 쇼윈도로 남기엔 성수는 그 이상의 무한한 가능성을 지니고 있는 곳이다.

과거 지하의 클럽 홀에서 비밀리에 키워왔던 한국 비주류 음악인들과 클럽 소유주들의 연대를 표방하는 ‘개방적클럽연대’. 사실 앞서가는 패션과 독특한 제스쳐, 해방된 정신은 모두 비주류 음악과 그를 담은 클럽홀에서 시작되었다.

성수에 다시 한번 이러한 연대를 맺어보는 상상을 해본다. 클럽홀을 발판삼아 비주류 음악인들은 저들만의 문화 이벤트를 기획하며, 대중들에게 선보이는 일종의 문화 실험을 이어간다. 매주 독특한 ‘힙스터’들이 모여 성수의 남녀노소 대중들과 함께 즐기는 음악과 춤은 우리를 틀에 박힌 K – 무언가로부터 해방시켜줄 것이다. 해방된 우리는 성수를 진정 가지고 놀며 지속가능한 문화 지대로 만들어낼 수 있을 것이라 믿는다.

Seongsu-dong is now first place where trendy and challenging cultural contents from home and abroad want to show themselves. However, in order for this leading cultural flow to be sustainable, people who can continue to create, discover, or transform new cultural content are needed. Seongsu has unlimited possibilities beyond that to remain a fixed show window for certain big brands

“Open Club Solidarity” had advocated the solidarity of Korean non-mainstream musicians and club owners who have been secretly raised in underground club halls in the past. In fact, the leading fashion, unique gestures, and liberated spirit all began with non-mainstream music and club halls containing them.

I imagine once again establishing this solidarity in Seongsu. Based on the club hall, non-mainstream musicians plan their own cultural events and continue a kind of cultural experiment presented to the public. The music and dance that unique “hipsters” gather every week to enjoy with the public of men and women of all ages in Seongsu will free us from the stereotyped K – something. Liberated us will be able to truly play with Seongsu-dong and make it a sustainable cultural zone.

Site

연무장로 북서쪽에서 남동쪽으로 계속해서 전진하고 있는 성수의 트렌디한 문화의 흐름, 그 가장 끝단에 위치하여 아직 성수의 개발 열기가 비교적 미지근하게 닿아있는 부지입니다. 해당 사이트는 주류의 문화들로부터 살짝 등지고 성수 본연의 모습을 향하고 있다고 볼 수 있습니다.

Located at the end of trendy flow of Seoungsu, the site is located where the heat of development of Seongsu is still relatively inactive. It can be seen that the site is slightly turned away from the mainstream cultures and is heading for the original appearance of Seongsu.

이러한 특성을 반영하는 대상지 주변은 자동차 정비소와 소규모 공장들로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 이들이 모여 만든 파사드는 공업사의 향기가 짙게 남아, 철제의 재질과 특유의 수직적인 무늬로 이곳만의 독특한 분위기를 자아냅니다.

The area around the target area, which reflects these characteristics, is surrounded by automobile repair shops and small factories. The façade they created together leaves a strong scent of industrial history, creating a unique atmosphere here with iron materials and unique vertical patterns.

Concept

성수의 선도적인 문화 흐름이 지속가능하기 위해서는 계속해서 새로운 문화 컨텐츠를 창작, 발굴, 혹은 변형해줄 사람들, 즉 ‘진정한 힙스터’들이 필요하다고 생각했습니다. 그 힙스터들은 바로 비주류 문화인들입니다. 그들은 계속해서 새로운 문화를 탐구하고 좇는, 마치 문화 용광로의 실험가들과도 같습니다. 자신들이 향유하는 비주류 문화가 대중화되어 보급되는 순간 다시 또 다른 비주류적인 무언가를 위해 떠나는 그들은 문화를 정체시키지 않고 계속해서 순환시킵니다.

In order for a leading cultural flow in Seongsu to be sustainable, people who would continually create, discover, or transform new cultural contents, namely, ‘true hipsters’ are needed.

The hipsters are non-mainstream cultural people. They are like experimenters on a cultural furnace, where they continue to explore and follow new cultures. As soon as the non-mainstream culture they enjoy becomes popular and disseminated, they continue to cycle the culture, not stagnate, but leave for something else non-mainstream.

역사적으로, 이러한 비주류 문화들은 대체로 비주류 음악 밴드가 보급되고 공연되는 라이브 클럽 홀로부터 파생됩니다. 라이브 밴드 공연문화는 개성적인 옷차림부터, 독특한 제스쳐, 그리고 음악에 맞춰 춤을 추는 행위를 통해 개방적이고 자유로운 사상을 촉진시키는 종합 문화 집합체라고 볼 수 있습니다.

Historically, these non-mainstream cultures are largely derived from live club halls, where non-mainstream music bands are distributed and performed. Live band performance culture can be seen as a multicultural collection that promotes open and free thinking through individual attire, unique gestures, and the act of dancing to music.

Design

이곳은 음악의 생산과 대중에게로의 공연이 건물 전체에서 동시 다발적으로 이루어지는 음악의 양조장과도 같습니다. 서부권에서는 주택에 딸린 차고지에서 보통 실현되는데, 이번 프로젝트에서는 이러한 가라지 밴드와 같은 공업사의 디자인 요소들을 차용한 공간들을 수직적으로 쌓아 올려 보았습니다.

It’s like a music brewery, with music production and public performance occurring simultaneously throughout the building. That’s usually done in residential garages in the West, where this project vertically stacks up spaces that adopt industrial design elements, like garages.
